Using Nitrogen to eliminate sprinkler ice plugs

FM Global has recognized the benefit of using nitrogen as a supervisory gas in cold storage applications for the mitigation of ice plugs/freeze damage.

In the January 2024 edition of 2-81 FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheet, the time between investigations for ice plugs and freeze damage to fire sprinkler piping and fire sprinklers has been extended when using nitrogen.

For systems with nitrogen, and after two satisfactory ice-plug investigations, system checks have been extended to 3 years. Previously, system checks were to be performed semiannually.

What Makes Nitrogen Generators the Right Choice?

A nitrogen generator provides several advantages over traditional air compressor/dryer configurations:

    • Many more systems can be served by a single nitrogen generator than a single regenerative air dryer
    • Actual operational effectiveness (no ice plugs)
    • Corrosion mitigation in areas maintained above freezing temperatures (loading docks, coolers)
    • More cost effective than dry air pacs
    • Significantly less maintenance cost and labor
    • Saves money on new construction projects - 120 C-factor allowed by NFPA 13 when nitrogen is used allows for reduced sprinkler pipe and/or fire pump size
    • Reduced energy usage
